Purple-red vellum has been used for manuscripts in times as varied as the first-century Roman Empire, the Carolingian Age, and Renaissance Italy. These manuscripts are rich in color and give an impression of wealth and vividness. Recent research has shown that often brazilwood was used to obtain this gorgeous effect.
Bee & Elephant is excited to present our recreation of this stunning strata, made by combining our lambskin vellum, made with traditional tools and procedures on local meat lambs, with our homemade brazilwood dye, which is concocted according to a renaissance recipe.
Available in all our standard sizes.
*As a natural animal product, variations in color, texture, and pattern are to be expected. Please allow up to two weeks for production.
