Artisanal, Small-batch Organic Hide Glue

Until the advent of chemical glues in the 20th century, hide glue was the strongest adhesive available for use in the home and for artisans. It was used for everything from carpentry to bow-making to illumination. Our hide glue is made is small batches following traditional methods with natural ingredients. It is a time-consuming and horrifyingly smelly process (says the parchmenter), and we are very proud to add this timeless and useful product to our catalog.<br /><br />Glue is stored and shipped in dehydrated crystals and must be re-hydrated in hot water to the desired viscosity. The resulting glue will form a very strong bond, but should not be left in wet conditions for extended time. Getting occasionally damp is generally not an issue<br /><br />Two sizes are available. Large is approximately 2 ounces of glue grains, and is suitable for carpentry, bow making, and other building and craft applications. Scribes will do well to stick with the smaller packet. A little goes a long way.<br /><br />*We have both sheep glue and rabbit glue available. There is no effective difference between the two. However, if you are an iconographer and would prefer the traditional rabbit glue for that application, please let us know.
